My feeling is that some are worth more than others and are there so you can kill those characters or miss some and still get the cannon ending. Definitely didn't get 45 or 30 and still got the good ending. My third playthrough I rushed through the game and only got the moral points toward the end of the game with the little Dark One and the two for sparing the two main characters. I don't think this is right the moral point system is very vague. You can also gain 2 more moral points, one for killing the thug beating on the first slave after being invited up by the Baron, and another by knocking out the thug beating the slave woman further up. Don’t kill any slaves at the Oasis, also once you reach the top via the buckets make sure to save the slaves from the cells behind from where you climb up.
